Nonomiya Shrine is known as the place where Saio, selected from among the princesses and other imperial women as the emperor’s deputy, had purified herself before her duty to visit Ise Shrine on behalf of the emperor. The shrine keeps the classic sacred atmosphere from the Heian period (794-1185) with the black torii-gate and brushwood fence.

The black torii-gate is made from kunugi tree and is the oldest torii-gate in Japan. The main deity is Amaterasu Ogami (Goddess of sun) and is a very historic shrine in Sagano area.

This shrine is also known through a Chapter of Sacred Tree, in the Tale of Genji where Hikaru Genji and Lady Rokujo had a heartbreaking separation. How these two had aparted from each other in a cold field is one of the most famous episode of this tale.

Nonomiya Shrine, however is now popular for bringing luck in matchmaking. They have lucky charm designed based on Tale of Genji, too. Many visit here throughout the year, some getting a charm with a drawing of Heian style could holding hands.

The turtle stone placed beside the Deity Nonomiya Daikokuten is said to have a power in making ones wish come's true within one year by robbing it while making a prayer. If you are there, why not give it a try and pray as much as you can, from love affair to health and fortune.

There is a bamboo forest outside of the Shrine. The time around here seems to have stopped since the ancient period.
