Autumn tints of Arashiyama we can enjoy secretly at Rokuo-in Temple.

When I feature on the beautiful entrance street in Kyoto for the magazine, then Rokuo-in Temple with beautiful stone pavement entrance will be chosen absolutely. Sunlight comes off through the green trees in summer time, and when the late autumn season comes, then the entrance street will be covered up with stunning red leaves carpet which you don’t feel like even stepping on top of them.

Because of being away from a main tourist route of Sagano and Arashiyama, you are able to enjoy a time of autumn fully and also slowly by taking your time if you are on the right hours even though it is the best season for the autumn-leaf viewing.

Especially, if you are female person, you are able to stay at a temple lodge in Rokuo-in Temple, so that you can wake up early in the morning and go to see the whole scenery for yourself without any crowds around you. From your stay, you can have a nice view of Rokuo-in Temple’s garden and you are able to appreciate the beauty of garden trees and bird’s song quietly as if you were not in the busiest time in Kyoto without any disturbs from anybody around.

It is only 4,500 yen for one night stay with breakfast included. You are going to have the speciality of Rokuo-in Temple’s vegetable meal in the morning. Moreover, you can participate in Zazen and preaching of a monk in the early morning, so that you start off your day with Zazen and preaching of a monk in order to free yourself of evil thoughts and then having a genuine vegetable meal. After that, you take your time to have some moments viewing autumn tints from your room and now you can go out to see autumn events in Sagano and Arashiyama. For your information, if you would like to make a reservation for the stay, please remember that they only take phone call and also you need to get back to your room by 7:30 p.m.

Rokuo-in Garden was designated beauty spots in 1987 by Kyoto City. It is well-known that their principal image, Amitabha, is made by Unkei. ‘Kempon Chakushoku Musou Kokushi-zo statue’ is an important cultural property and this temple has more different cultural assets as well. This large 1,895㎡ garden has a flat landscape garden style called ‘Hiraniwashiki’ without any artificial hills and ponds and it is created to make the ground flat, so that you might feel entire quiet atmosphere there.

A front yard on the left side, after you come inside the beautiful temple entrance gate, has maple trees planted, which are not so many, but it seems they cuddle close with reliquary hall and the outstanding colors more than makes up for a small amount of trees. The red color even stands out with the deep green moss background. When you take a seat on veranda side and have some view from there, with Arashiyama background scenery, you are able to have a stunning and deep scenery that rooftop of halls and red leaves on the trees overlapping each other.

If you go to Arashiyama area, you might want to buy one day ticket of Keifuku train (adult : 500 yen / children : 250 yen).  You can get off at Rokuo-in Temple Station, too. It will be awesome to find out the secret spot while people go somewhere else in the best season of autumn time in Sagano and Arashiyama area.
