Established about 1,300 years ago in Nara era. People had faith in god deeply for their harvest, and prosperous business after the Middle Ages. This is the headquarter of Inari jinja Shrines which spreads approximately 30,000 all over Japan. The number of people visit here for Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to a shrine) is a top class in Japan. In late years, foreign tourists chose this place as number one sight seeing spot in Japan.
The best highlight place is this famous ‘Senbon Torii (a thousand torii). A religion, in order to let through people’s wish and also dedicated torii gate in return of their appreciation that their wish came through, started in Edo era and now the shrine has gained 10,000 torii gates all over its mountain now. It is very powerful to see these consecutive vermillion colors which are considered to be against evil sprits. When you visit here in the early morning which you don’t see not so many people around, then you can feel something mysterious for sure. After you go through this Senbon Torii gates, it will be a route of Mt.Inari (Elevation: 233m) which is a place where Inari-Daijin god descended to earth. Spending only 2 hours to go around different type of shrines such as shrines for your eyes, throat, cure diseases, and you can receive several kinds of asset. Moreover, you are able to view all the Kyoto city from ‘Yotsutsuji’. If the time allows you to come here, I would like you to choose shoes and clothes that are easy to walk and move.
In addition, Romon (tower gate) donated by Hideyoshi Toyotomi is the largest scale in Japan and also there is a magnificent main shrine that has engraved parts created in Azuchimomoyama era as well. Inside of the shrine, you can see white foxes (messenger of a god) everywhere. I also recommend you to go to the restaurants in front of the shrine which have triangle sweet Inari sushi and grilled sparrow skewers.
