Coffee will never stop getting better.

“Wow! this coffee is totally different from what I have tasted before!”
I still remember that I got really surprised when I had specialty coffee at a new cafe in my town a few years ago.
Honestly, I thought that I got used to having these good ones and it became a usual taste, however, I found a place in Kyoto that gives you a total different world of coffee that you have never ever seen and tasted before.
Coffee roastery and coffee shop, WEEKENDERS COFFEE, locates in front of Eiden Mototanaka station in Sakyo-ku.
Mototanaka station is two stations before Ichijo-ji station which has Keibunsha. It takes about 15 minutes if you come from Demachi-yanagi station, which is the last stop of Keihan-densha.
They opened cafe in 2005, started roasting coffee beans in 2011 and it became a coffee beans shop in order to specialize their work for only roasting in 2014. You are still able to order coffee there, but there are no seats.
In Kyoto, deep roasted coffee is the mainstream at any coffee shop. However, at this WEEKENDERS COFFEE has its own way, which means that they roast beans lightly. Kyoto locals are not use to having this taste, yet they introduce something new style toward everyone by extracting clearly beans’ sweetness and flavor.
The owner and the roaster, Mr.Masahiro Kaneko. There are thousands who fall in love with his roasted coffee beans and more than 50 cafes which carry his beans are in Japan now.
I asked him why people love his coffee beans and he said, “I just try to make my favorite coffee, and that’s it.”
His favorite coffee is something that is very clear taste. He chose this roasting machine in order to extract its original taste of beans itself clearly and also it doesn’t get affected by the open air.
You are able to smell the flavor of roasted beans and ground beans and get to know more about them. They also prepare some explanations for each taste.
After you enjoy smelling all the flavor, you definitely need to order your favorite one.
I ordered Gedebe from Ethiopia which has fruity and sweet flavor.
I have never used this word ‘rich’ on any coffee, but the flavor went through my nose and the smell stayed there for a while and therefore I recognize this taste as ‘rich’ with no doubt. You know that once you have a delicious coffee, you can’t help saying, “Wow, this is really good!”. The thing is, whenever you sip your coffee, I bet you are going to open you eyes and saying “Wow!” again and again.
Mr.Kaneko told me to put a sugar in it because it will taste like a jam. I was doubting completely what he said and I sipped once and it tasted something totally different from coffee! This is something like a magic he makes! Amazing!
I also ordered a cup of cappuccino. Foam and espresso makes their own harmony together. Foam makes all the taste really rich.
WEEKENDERS COFFEE sells some coffee goods that you can make yours at your house.
They only choose and sell something simple. They also use some of these items here at this coffee shop and that makes us feel like collecting all of these.
If you would like to know something and ask Mr.Kaneko about several things, then you should visit after 3:00 p.m. It is a time that he is able to take some rest out of roasting work and probably easy to talk to him. He will answer politely whatever you ask about coffee.
Coffee beans price is flat rate depending on its gram weight except Geisha, which is rare and special coffee beans he said. He also told me that we can’t have any of these genuine coffee beans at this price in Tokyo. In order to keep its freshness, the menu will be changed once in a month.
Mr.Kaneko faces to coffee directly and pursues his goal everyday. To me, his aura and soul has something like a craftsmanship. He goes straight forward without looking around and complete what he starts. Yet, he opens his mind to everyone.
He never aware of being in Kyoto, but I am really glad that he opens his coffee shop here and I feel that I live in Kyoto like its meant to be.
WEEKENDERS COFFEE gives me a world that I have never seen and tasted before. When you come to Kyoto, whether if you like coffee or not, please stop by this amazing coffee shop.
