“Genuine restaurants in Kyoto will never show them off with their own advertisement or anything like that. The more the restaurants do some efforts on their dishes, the less they talk about it. That’s how the restaurants in Kyoto stand for.”
I wrote down these words when I had an interview with one of the good restaurants before and this is something that the best restaurants in Kyoto have in common. I have been to a lot of restaurants here in Kyoto and I actually agree upon this message. It could be also considered in its own interior design, atmosphere, not only just their exquisite dishes.
When I stepped into CAFE KOCSI for the first time, I thought about this.
CAFE KOCSI is a cafe on the second floor of the building located on Tominokouji-sanjo Street. It is about 7 minutes by walk from Karasuma-oike station.
This is not a book cafe even though you can see so many books inside.
It is very popular for their home-made breads as well, but they are not a bakery. (They opened another cafe last year called annee on Muromachi-aneyakouji street and they started distributing breads to CAFE KOCSI. )
They cook homemade french cuisine, but it doesn’t look like a french restaurant inside. CAFE KOCSI is combined with everything what I said above. Good books, delicious home-made breads. French cafe and homemade cuisine with drinks and comfortable atmosphere.
I was able to see a man alone, lovers, friends, people having coffee, drinking alcohol, enjoying their meals. It seems like there are so many ways of spending times here. This cafe atmosphere will accept you no matter what you do here.
Not only its interior designs and the places which all the tables are good, but also their atmosphere is very cozy. For example, you might hesitate to open your computer at an old coffee shop, or you do not feel like reading a book at a chain cafe. However, both actions will fit here at CAFE KOSCI somehow. It’s like right between an old awesome coffee shop and cozy cafe.
They are the staffs here.
Ms. Nishina (on the center), the manager, told me a lot of things about this cafe.
The owner of this cafe used to be a baker and trained himself at AUX BACCHANALES in Kyoto and opened CAFE KOCSI 15 years ago.
After that, the owner went abroad to study french bakery, his wife opened a book cafe only on weekends. As you can see so many books right here, and that is the reason why.
A variety of interesting books! Well chosen by people who love books and well organized.
I ordered a special quiche of the day.
I actually asked the manager when people eat quiche. She said, “It’s like we have a toast bread in Japanese coffee shop right? then it’s like that in French. Moreover, quiche can be mixed with so many different ingredients and it tastes amazing so I would also recommend this dish for your main meal.”
This is an amazing hotdog of CAFE KOCSI. White sauce and cheese on top of a home-made baguette and toasted all at once. Everyone should try it.
They have more menus, such as Rilettes, Ajillo, and Pate which can totally go with alcohol drinks and moreover, Croque-monsieur, Curry, Risotto, salad, desert, and so many kinds of alcohol drinks.
Take out is available.
I found this cool cigarettes vending machine.
I see some cute Japanese souvenirs on a counter and also in a glass case. These small things and all other interiors are reflected on the owner’s taste directly.
Their aim is ‘the place that people can eat the same dishes deliciously whenever they come.’
Nothing has been changed, nor menus, since they opened this cafe. Having spent 15 years without any changes must be something extraordinary thing.
This cafe has a great personality and thoughtful mind.
Why do I feel so much coziness here? I think it is because a thoughtfulness by the owner and his wife brings up on this cafe and it goes to all the staffs who works here.
The manager, Ms.Nishina said, “I have never ever seen any cafes which really care the customers so much before,” comparing other places she used to work at. We completely take care of all the customers who come here even to the small tiny things. On the other hand, all the customers who love this place are great people. Therefore, everything combines all together in a good way and create this amazing cozy atmosphere.
“I am very attracted by its great personality all the time.”
Whenever you are alone, with your partner, with your friends, or whenever you want to read a book, eat breads or dishes, and drink alcohol drinks, CAFE KOCSI will be the place you definitely would like to visit. You can spend times with any ways you want for sure.
