Uraderamachidori starts quietly aside from the bustling Shijo Kawaramachi full of young people. History goes back to Hideyoshi Toyotomi's (one of Japan's Three Unifiers) reconstruction scheme of Kyoto, when it is said to have been created in pair with the Teramachidori. As its name expresses, it is the back street of Teramachidori, where many temples is collected. There were once a time that street fair had been held. Even today, we can enjoy places that are quite different from the 'back-street' image.
Tastumi is only one block behind the main street of Kyoto and convenient for a quick drink. Since it closes rather early, people stop by briefly as a first bar, for a simple supper after work or even during night time walk with their book. The male staffs are all friendly and is always happy to explain about their long menu.
It is interesting how these standing bar often has a menu unique to is locality or to the owners taste. You could enjoy taking a chance with your instinct. A perfect standing bar for beginners around Kyoto.
