Okutan Kiyomizu

A 'genuine' tofu cuisine which has been kept for more than 300 years. Never change the exquisite taste since Edo era.

From Higashioji up toward Yasaka pagoda walking up on a stone-paved road, you can see a signboard of Okutan on your right side. Some of the foreign tourists are looking inside.

A portable folding chair with Japanese felt and big lantern welcome us and after we go through the entrance gate, there was a traditional Japanese house awaiting us. This old house proudly has 380 year-old history behind.

The garden with thick green plants viewing from Engawa (open corridor) provides us coolness.

Even though a lunch time has passed already, the rooms are almost full. We are able to hear their staffs explaining the menu to foreign customers in English. We imagine that it might be hard to explain the differences of tofu and look through our own menu. Yudofu (boiled tofu) course or Hiyayakko (cold tofu) course. We are going to have Yudofu course since it's famous.

I order 'Mukashi-dofu Hitotori" and my daughter order 'Okimari Hitotori'.

Mukashi-dofu is a tofu that craftsmen make in an old way at their tofu studio which is in the basement under their garden.

Waitress tells us to eat tofu without a sauce first in order to taste tofu itself. This tofu has a flavor of soybeans standing out in my mouth.

'Okimari' is a thick taste tofu in spite of its smooth texture like silken tofu. I realize that the tofu we usually eat is more watery. Sesami-dofu as an hors d'oeuvre is made from white sesame which is grounded and toasted, so the color is thicker than a regular one and very fragrant.

Grated yam, kinome dengaku (bean curd baked and coated with miso and pepper leaf buds), tempra and at last, a bowl of rice with pickles. Our mouths and stomachs are very much satisfied and left that restaurant. Gochisousama.
