Nostalgic sent becomes a relaxing cafe.
Kita-ku Murasakino area has a sento called 'Funaoka Onsen' which is designated as national cultural property.
In the same Funaoka Onsen district, Sarasa Nishijin is an extreme nostalgic cafe which used to run as a sento until 1998 under the name of 'Fujinomori Onsen'.
There is a former bathroom at the back one step up from the front. When you look around carefully, you are able to find some parts that tell you a sento atmosphere such as the way they devide the room itself, but they refurbish properly, so it looks cozy wherever you have a seat.
Once you step inside, there is a place for counter seats and staff on your left side. You can see cakes and desserts lining up on a shelf.
Characteristically, a fresh color and three-dimensional tiles are everywhere on the wall ion this building. This is a 'Majolica style' which was a trend from the early Taisho era to the early Showa era. These tiles were made from lead glaze which is prohibited to use nowadays.
In the menu, there is Lunch Time (12:00 p.m. ~ 3:00 p.m.) Late Lunch Time (3:00 p.m. ~ 6:00 p.m.) and Dinner Time (6:00 p.m. ~ 10:00 p.m.), so you can eat big portion of cafe meal anytime you visit. Of course there are plenty of cake and dessert menu as well.
Inside the cafe, not only tourists, also many of the local people hanging around.
They hold a live music event regularly in a great night atmosphere. (It looks like the sound will be perfect since it used to be a sento)
It locates little far from the center of Kyoto city, but there are so many spots to see around, so you might want to plan to stay here and spend some times slowly.
